. >> in this week's debate president obama has a great deal to lose. romney's is the most difficult position. obama's is the most dangerous. does the president here, karen, have more to lose than mitt romney? i mean, obviously the polls show that he's ahead. >> i think we're so focused on comparing it to each other. i think we need to be focused on is what kind of performance does each man need to have? i do think that the fact that -- remember, president obama was not good at debates during the last cycle. he got better throughout the course of the debates. so did mitt romney. seeing what performances are like, i think the stakes are very high for both men. that's not his problem. his problem is that he is able to have one good day, not two good days. he needs to have a solid wednesday and be solid thursday, friday. otherwise it looks like another fluke. you prepared for one performance but your campaign is in disarray. you don't have answers to questions. you can't give details to policies. but you're making big promises. that's not going to work for

if you're governor rom any, he did very well in the debates and i think president obama is a good debater, not a great debater, to be frank about it. but the expectations game and the reality of what he has to accomplish is he has to go out there and change minds. and he has to do it when the fact is, when this is republicans ignored. they know him. they don't like his policies. >> go ahead, joe. >> i think that chris makes a great point. the 1980, ronald reagan really changed the course of the debate and helped himself by saying to americans, think back, are you better off today than you were four years ago, is it easier to get a job, are there fewer of you that are unemployed and by getting the american folks to concentrate on that as opposed to how much they like president carter really helped. >> that's a variation of the question that the romney campaign has been asking for several months and the results that they're getting based on the polling is not the answer that the romney campaign wants. >> well style matters in the debate. think about ronald reagan. jimmy carter had a lot of

the obama campaign is making an effort to portray romney as having been dishonest in that debate? can that argument be effective when you're trying to reach some of these undecided voters who at this late hour are still in fact undecided. >> i think it's a mistake for the president. it sounds like sour grapes that he wasn't able to stand up to romney who was lying. that's a kind negativity. the president needs to tell what's he wants to do. one of the things was his own agenda was so thin, that he wasn't able to convey to the public that he had an offensive, a effective second term agenda. i think the second thing he has to do is he really has to bear down and answer some more detailed questions about his own agenda, about his own debt reduction plan, which as andrea mitchell pointed out that evening, really has a lot of holes in it. so i think he would be best to not complain about, not lambaste his opponent, but really kind of hit the books, get down to work, portray a more positive agenda the next time around. and for goodness sakes, look at the camera, don't look down. >> you
